ASSET TRANSPORTATION CRISIS: GPS TRACKING TO THE RESCUE
For centuries, pirates have prowled on the open seas seeking booties of gold, silver, jewelry or anything else that is valuable and they could carry. The days of wooden sailing vessels are gone, but gold, jewels and other moveable valuable assets are still moving around the globe at all times, and the pirates are still out there. Large jewelry conglomerates, auction houses, and electronics companies move large amounts of valuable assets around the world aboard ships, airplanes, and every other form of available transportation to get their goods from one location to another.
Though in the past it was infrequent, thefts occurred along the way, and due to the nature of assets, they can be easily grabbed, placed into another vehicle and are gone.
Then there was the advent of GPS satellite technology and GPS tracking. At first the technology was bulky and unreliable, and even now that the devices are considerably smaller, GPS technology cannot penetrate inside a building, a car trunk or a metal container all locations which a case of diamonds or valuable computer technology may stowed inside of.
Thefts of valuable assets are currently on the rise worldwide, though still infrequent, one theft can amount to losses that amount in the millions of dollars. Annual jewelry loses in the United States alone amount to over $1 billion.
In an effort to combat the theft of valuable assets, many companies have resorted to the use of GPS technology with a twist that has recently started surfacing on the market. These new generation GPS devices utilize both the standard GPS satellite technology when the device is placed in a location where it is able to see some sky, and the new technology know as Assisted GPS (AGPS) technology when the device is in a location where it cannot get a clear satellite signal. AGPS is able to gain a relatively accurate location by triangulation of distance from cell phone towers, but the key is that the user of the device will never lose touch of their assets.
Many firms across the US have already tapped into this invaluable resource, and successfully tracking valuable jewelry shipments, artwork and sensitive military parts. Now we have an instant and accurate way of being able to see exactly where are shipments are around the country, said the CEO of a large auction house, who wished to remain anonymous.
It doesnt matter if its inside a trailer, or a railroad car, we know where it is 24 hours a day, seven days a week when its on the road, he added. A Manhattan-based jeweler said, Due to the nature of the size of the cases we use for transportation, someone could very easily take our diamonds and throw it into the trunk of a car. And since normal GPS cannot track inside the trunk of a car, that will be it, it will be impossible for us to track the package and hundreds of thousands of dollars would have to be written off.
Assisted GPS trackers are a godsend for our industry, he added.
