Orion provides the capability to detect hidden electronic devices, regardless of whether the device is radiating, hard wired, or even turned on at all! Orion is the latest advancement in Non-linear Junction Detection and evaluation for Countersurveillance.

Back in the early 70's a method was developed to detect eavesdropping devices though the analysis of harmonic emissions caused by an illuminating signal when it is reflected off of a target.

Semiconductors contain multiple layers of silicon, a P-Type and an N-Type, the point where they meet is called a Non Linear Junction. This junction also appears in nature when dissimilar metals come in contact with one another (such as that used in the old crystal radio set). Also, the rust on a screw, the springs in a car, or the support structure in any piece of furniture may also contain non-linear junctions (resulting from corrosion).

A Non-Linear Junction Detector finds potential eavesdropping devices by flooding a suspect area or target with a spectrally pure microwave RF signal (usually around 888 or 915 MHz). Various frequencies are then monitored for a reflected harmonic signal.

The instrument typically has an antenna and a control unit. The antenna is mounted on an extendable pole, and really nothing more than a microwave waveguide which both emit and collects the signals (with a duplexer). The control unit is usually a multiple channel, highly sensitive radio receiver tuned to specific second, and third harmonic frequencies. While it is possible to measure the 4th, 5th, 6th, and other harmonics those above the third are only of limited TSCM value.

  • Synthesized transceiver provides frequency stability and agility to automatically search for clean operating frequencies (Frequency range 902-928 MHz for U. S. Models and 850 MHz to 1,000 MHz for Export Models).
  • Circular, polarized antenna removes risk of missing a threat due to incorrect antenna polarization.

Specifications:

  • Infrared Headphones:
    • Headphones can be plugged directly into main unit or plugged into the Infrared Receiver.
    • Plugging Headphones into the main Unit turns off the IR transmit function on the main unit.
    • Plugging Headphones into the IR Audio Receiver automatically turns on the IR Audio Receiver.
    • Volume Control is adjusted via the main Unit.
  • Antenna Polarization:
    • Circular for both transmit and receiver functions.
  • Transmitter:
    • Frequency Bands: 850 - 1005 MHz @ 200 kHz steps. USA: 902.2-927.8 MHz. Foreign models are adjustable between 850 and 1005 MHz.

    • Gain Control: The gain of the unit is enhanced using software integration. Various modes of operation have different integration algorithms for maximum performance. Setting the level of integration using the SET key controls the gain.

    • Externally rechargeable standard type battery

    • Run time 1 hour on full charge when operating at full power.
  • Battery Charger:

  • LED Indicator:
    • Flashing LED: Charge Pending (Applies to the situation when two batteries are simultaneously placed in the charger)

    • Dark LED: No Battery or Charge Complete
    • NOTE: To test for faulty batteries, place a single battery in the charger. If the LED continues to flash and never goes Bright or Dark, then the battery is faulty and should be discarded.
