Hidden Cameras Help Expose Child Abuse
As more and more parents choose to work full-time, nannies have become more commonplace. Hiring a nanny has its advantages, but also raises safety concerns. For parents, leaving their babies and young children with a complete stranger can be a difficult thing. In successfully situations, the nannies become a trusted member of the family. Less frequently, nannies have been involved in theft, neglect, and in some extreme cases, child abuse. By installing a hidden nanny camera, parents are able to find out how the nanny is really interacting with the children when the parents aren't around.
Nanny Cameras have come a long way since their inception. Early versions of what was soon dubbed the “nanny cam” were Hidden Cameras inside of teddy bears, which is many cases defeated the purpose of covertness because there was a wire coming out of the rear of the toy to power the camera. “My nanny knows that we have cameras installed in our house, we don’t tell her where, we tell her that they are there,” said Julia, a Long Island mother of three. “For me it’s more of a deterrent rather than a measure where I have to deal with the problem after the fact,” she added.
A New York City Police Department spokesperson said, “We’ve had over two dozen arrests over the past three months of nannies and caregivers caught on tape by hidden cameras abusing children.”
“Luckily none of them were serious,” added the spokesperson. Brad Frederickson, a security consultant explained the first step is to conduct a proper interview of the potential nanny to be hired. “This is the first step of prevention before the family should resort to installing a Hidden Camera, or any other covert surveillance system” He added, “If a camera system is a must to put the family’s mind at ease, a device like the Recon DVR Cam is an ideal solution, without having to install an elaborate and costly surveillance system.”
